In 1990, some years after graduating from college, I performed at a showcase called A New Generation of Dance in Westchester presented by the Dance in Education Fund. It was there I met three dancers from the Paul Taylor company: Cathy McCann, Patrick Corbin, and Tom Patrick. They were on the program dancing a piece by Cathy.

The characters in this dance were based on the kings one sees in a deck of playing cards.

This idea of portraying iconic characters lodged in my brain somewhere and probably influenced my future idea of bringing chess pieces to life.
